OEE

Overall Equipment Effectiveness

The indicator that tells you what share of planned time a machine actually spent producing good pieces at the standard rate.

Formula

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

OEE combines three losses into one number. Availability tells you how long the machine was down. Performance tells you how much slower it ran than it should. Quality tells you how many pieces had to be rejected.

The number alone says little. The value of OEE is that each of the three components can be broken down into causes and counted in recoverable hours.

In the literature 85% is considered world class. Plants that are just starting to measure usually start much lower, and the first measured value tends to be a surprise.

Example

Availability 90%, performance 85%, quality 98% gives OEE 75%. Each component looks fine, and together a quarter of the time is gone.

What it looks like in the system

Smart Monitor calculates OEE per machine, shift, part and the whole plant. Planned time comes from the shift calendar, so the machine is not penalised for time it was not meant to run.
