MTBF
Mean Time Between Failures
How long a machine runs on average from one breakdown to the next.
Formula
MTBF = Total run time ÷ Number of breakdowns
A rising MTBF means the machine breaks down less often. A falling one is a signal to service it before breakdowns start wrecking the plan.
Example
160 hours of run time and 4 breakdowns in a month give an MTBF of 40 hours.
What it looks like in the system
Calculated for every machine from recorded breakdowns. Together with MTTR it gives an objective basis for the repair-or-replace decision.
